Local ministry opportunities abound this summer! The following is a list of Six Ways to Serve Your City this Summer:
Carpenter’s Shelter— Every first and third Saturday, the First Baptist kitchen prepares dinner while three to four church volunteers transport and serve the meal for residents of this homeless shelter in Old Town Alexandria. The organization serves 750 homeless and formerly homeless children and adults each year. More than 90% of clients who graduate from the shelter and continue on with its community case management program remain in permanent housing during their first year out of the shelter.
Bethany House of Northern Virginia—One in four women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime. Bethany House seeks to help women and their children who have suffered from domestic violence regain health and dignity and become re-established in their community by providing temporary housing and support. Donations of cleaning supplies and hygiene products are always appreciated. Additionally, the missions office is enlisting an army of volunteers ready to respond to various material needs as they arise.
ALIVE! furniture delivery—Founded in 1969, ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically (ALIVE!) is the largest private safety net for the needy in the city of Alexandria, serving thousands of Alexandrians annually. On the morning of Saturday, July 9, FBCA will assist with the organization’s furniture delivery program.
Meals on Wheels—Under the umbrella of Senior Services of Alexandria, Meals on Wheels provides hot and cold meals daily for seniors and disabled persons confined to their homes. FBCA is assigned distributions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays that occur during the fifth week of a month. Volunteers deliver the food and speak a word of encouragement. Dates this summer are: June 30, July 29 and August 30.
District Church building projects—First Baptist financially supports this young and growing church plant that currently has two campuses in our nation’s capital. The schools where they meet are in need of repairs, and we are in the process of organizing several work days during the summer.
Clothing Closet Relocation—Due to our upcoming church renovation, the Clothing Closet will be relocating, and we need many hands to move out inventory. The last day of operation for the closet is Monday August 1 with the move-out day scheduled for early August. Exact date TBD.
